So a week ago about this time, the other three fellows and I were all packed up and just about ready to leave Stump Sprouts Lodge after an unspeakably amazing four days of work. My final moments of retreat were spent in a private feedback session with Artistic Director, Roger Danforth, and our master director for the week, Shaw aficionado, David Staller. If you read Lily's post, you know we spent about 20 hours actively working with actors and David on a combination of Shaw and Shakespeare set against a backdrop of vivid green mountains and romantic sunsets. It was incredible, truly a gift to be given the time and ridiculously talented actors to play with, but for me the biggest lesson learned came in that last thirty minutes spent with Roger and David.
In this business you have to LOVE who you are. It sounds so simple, probably even cliche, but it is so true. To be an artist is an audacious act: "I have something of value to say/share, and you should/must listen." I have to be audacious; move forward believing that my unique experience of and in this world can and will be of value to others. And despite what names I am called, what others try to add to or take away from me, I have a story to tell. Only I can tell it and to do so with honesty and compassion I must love myself.
It is great to aspire to another's art, but of greater importance to honor all my parts and with the sum, tell my own truth, create my own art, and pay it forward.
